Today is My Birthday – Lindsey Cross

Today is my birthday! I will know many of you who read this post, but some of you I’m sure I’ve never met and most of you I won’t know nearly well enough to think you might be giving me a birthday present. I’m going to be selfish enough to ask you for something anyway in the spirit of promoting extra birthday happiness for myself, and that something is for just a tiny bit of your attention. A few minutes worth is all, really. Just enough time for you to read this short post about Eastern Further.  C’mon. It’s my birthday. Give an old girl her birthday wish?

For my birthday, I want to make sure that as many people as possible know what Eastern Further is and why we’re doing what we’re doing. I hope that by now you have seen some of the other posts from our website including profiles on team members running in the Disney Princess Half Marathon, outstanding alumni spotlights, profiles on current EKU student leaders, and bits of Eastern history. We’ve got a lot happening on this website, and here’s why: our aim is to support women’s leadership at Eastern Kentucky University, and there is a lot of great work being done by the Eastern community that deserves to be seen. We are putting all of this information together in order to encourage more widespread support for women’s leadership at the University in hopes that we can raise the funds to start a women’s leadership scholarship for EKU students. I might remind you that this initiative is being coordinated by alumnae and current students, not by the University. This is significant because we’ve found our experiences at EKU to be so important to us that we are willing to put in a substantial amount of work toward the University’s betterment in a completely volunteer capacity.

The idea for Eastern Further started with a group of alumnae decided to run in the Disney Princess Half Marathon together.  We felt that if a group of Colonels would be running in the race, we might as well put the efforts of our group toward a good cause. Once the idea of running to support women’s leadership at Eastern came up, there was no turning back. This cause spoke to us because of our individual experiences at the University, many of which you have heard about on this website. So just like any group running or walking for a cause or cure, we decided to run for Eastern. All of the miles we have pounded out on the pavement, the cold morning and late night training runs, we’ve dedicated to Eastern. And we hope that by running in this race we can draw some attention to our cause and raise some funds for the University.

Knowing that the types of outstanding experiences we’ve had at Eastern are not uncommon, we decided that our this initiative couldn’t be only focus on the women running the Princess Half when we are but a tiny portion of the story of women’s leadership at EKU.  So we’ve used our website to bring your profiles on current student leaders, the types of women that the scholarship we are working to start could go to support. We’ve brought you the stories of EKU alumnae who have done outstanding things with their careers, women who have benefited from their experiences at Eastern. Currently, we are working to draw a better picture of female University leaders, both past and present; you’ll see more of this topic in the New Year.

In a nutshell, this is what Eastern Further is up to. I hope you dig it. And not to be pushy, but if you do dig it, you should consider making a donation of whatever size is comfortable for you. And remember to designate your donation to the Eastern Further Women’s Leadership Scholarship. Thanks for reading! Consider my birthday wishes fulfilled.
